Gasoline prices continue to rise and hit new record at gas stations

by

The price of gasoline continued to rise at Brazilian stations this week and surpassed the record observed in the previous week, reaching an average of R$ 7.283 per liter, according to data from the ANP (Agência Nacional do Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis).

It was the third consecutive week of rise, following the rise in the price of anhydrous ethanol, which represents 27% of the mixture sold at gas stations. The value verified by the ANP this week is 0.2% higher than the previous record, of R$ 7,270 per liter.

The highest price detected by the ANP was R$ 8,599, the same as the previous week in São Paulo. Now, in addition to the capital, there is a gas station in Guarujá, on the coast of São Paulo, selling gasoline for that price.

The price of hydrous ethanol is also on the rise, closing the week at R$5,539 per liter, on average, up 0.8% over the previous week. In one month, the product became 10.4% more expensive in the country. In the plants of São Paulo, the product accumulates high of 12% in a month.

The ANP survey also detected a rise in the price of diesel, which rose 0.1% in the week, to R$ 6.610 per liter. The price of cooking gas remains stable: this week, the 13-kilo bottle was sold, on average, at R$ 113.50.

The market is working with the possibility of new adjustments for diesel, since the lag with respect to international quotations is today at levels similar to those verified before the mega-increases promoted by Petrobras in May.

According to Abicom (Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers), the average price of diesel in Brazilian refineries is R$1.71 per liter below import parity, a concept used by Petrobras’ pricing policy that simulates how much it would cost to bring the product from abroad.

In the case of gasoline, the domestic price is currently R$ 0.45 per liter below par, according to Abicom. The increase in the lag reflects the devaluation of the real and the recovery of prices in the US market in recent weeks.

The price of CNG, on the other hand, also continues to increase: this week it was sold at R$ 4,774 per cubic meter, a value 0.4% higher than that recorded in the previous week.

This fuel should maintain the upward trend, as Petrobras will readjust by 19%, starting next Sunday (1), the sale price of natural gas to distributors. Other suppliers will also promote increases and the industry expectation is that the product will rise, on average, 17%.

The transfers to the consumer depend on the state legislation for the sector. In some states, it’s immediate; in others, it only occurs on the dates of annual tariff readjustments. But Embrace estimates that tariffs for the industry will rise, on average, 9%.

In Rio de Janeiro, for example, the adjustment was authorized this Thursday (28) and is valid from May. At CEG, which serves the metropolitan region, the increases will be 6.8% for residential customers, 7% for commerce, 18.5% for industry and 19.6% for CNG.
