Died this Sunday (1st), at the age of 83, Carlos Eduardo Moreira Ferreira, businessman who presided over Fiesp (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo) and CNI (National Confederation of Industry) and was federal deputy for the former PFL, elected in 1998 by Sao Paulo. The cause of death was not reported.

Born in São Paulo, Ferreira was a lawyer linked to the electric energy sector and presided over the former Companhia Paulista de Energia Elétrica, which in the 1960s served 18 municipalities in the interior of São Paulo.

In the 1980s, he became vice-president of Fiesp, when he dedicated himself to the elaboration of the Action Plan for the CNI System. He was president of Fiesp and Ciesp for two terms (between 1992 and 1998), a period in which he experienced the impeachment of Fernando Collor, hyperinflation, the overvaluation of the real, high interest rates and the opening of the Brazilian market, according to Fiesp.

In a note of regret, the São Paulo federation stated that Moreira Ferreira “leaves an effective legacy for the industry and for Brazil” and “will be an eternal reference as a sector leader”, since he defended “important flags such as the breaking of state monopolies and structural reforms (administrative, social security and tax)”.

Also in a note of regret, Firjan (Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro) stated that, after becoming president of Fiesp, in 1992, Moreira Ferreira “fought for tax reforms and exemptions, one of the many agendas in which he was Firjan partner”.

The São Paulo federation highlights that the businessman’s management was “marked by a social perspective”, with an “ambitious distance education program from Sesi-SP and Senai-SP, in partnership with the Roberto Marinho Foundation and broadcast on TV”.

The program in question was Telecurso 2000, says Firjan, noting that Moreira Ferreira was one of those responsible for designing and launching the distance education initiative.

“The program reached about 30 million Brazilians outside the school system”, says the note from the Rio de Janeiro federation.

“For his strong performance in favor of the development of industry and the country, he was awarded by the federal government with the Order of Military Merit in the degree of Special Commander and with the degree of Grand Officer of the Order of Business Merit, industrial class, by the government of Portugal”, informs the note from Firjan.

Carlos Eduardo Moreira Ferreira leaves a wife and four children.
