Zelensky: The evacuation of the Azofstal steel plant in Mariupol will continue today

by

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky yesterday expressed satisfaction with the removal of the first civilians from the Azovstal steel plant in the port of Mariupol.

“I hope that today, Monday, all the necessary conditions will be met in order for the evacuation of people from Mariupol to continue,” Mr. Zelenski said in his sermon last night, adding that the plan envisages the operation to start again at 08:00 (local time and Greek time zone).

“We will continue to do everything we can to keep our people away from Azofstal, generally from Mariupol,” he added.

“The organization of humanitarian corridors is one of the dimensions of the ongoing negotiation process. It is very complicated. “But no matter how difficult it was, more than 350,000 people were rescued from the war zones.”

The head of the Ukrainian state had earlier announced that a first group of about a hundred civilians had left the factory premises.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has confirmed to the German Agency that it is cooperating with the UN to transport trapped civilians to safe ground via a humanitarian corridor.

According to Ukrainian officials, about 1,000 civilians are trapped in the underground facilities. Russian officials estimate that about 2,500 Ukrainian soldiers and “foreign mercenaries” are in the basements of Azovstal.
