Panel SA: Unions want to bring food issue to the salary negotiation table

by

Concerned about the effect of food shortages on workers, unions want to raise a series of proposals to take to wage campaigns on the food issue. The issue of hunger, even for families that have jobs, should be highlighted in the negotiations.

Miguel Torres, president of Força Sindical, talks about emergency alternatives to restore purchasing power. They would be temporary bonuses, increase in the values of food and meal vouchers, gas vouchers or emergency allowances.

“There are things that can be done without indexing. We need to start this debate. It is affecting the population’s diet”, he says.

According to Torres, one idea would be to increase the size of basic food baskets.

“Those who are employed have solidarity with relatives and friends who are not. This also increases the lack of food”, he says.
