Barbie presented this Wednesday (25) the first trans doll in its line in history. The tribute was paid to American actress Laverne Cox, a black transgender woman who has starred in series such as “Inventing Anna” and “Orange Is the New Black”.
“Laverne was chosen by Barbie® for all her contribution, impact, authenticity and legacy,” says the Mattel brand in a statement.
According to the company, the intention is to encourage children to discover themselves and present unlimited possibilities of games and tools with representative concepts.
“I hope everyone can look at this Barbie and dream big, just like I do,” said Laverne Cox in a statement. “The space of dreaming and manifesting is such a powerful source and can lead us to achieve more than you can even imagine,” says producer, writer and LGBTQIA+ advocate.
The doll comes in a red dress, high-heeled boots and silver metallic outfit, as well as earrings, makeup and long hair. The expected arrival in Brazil is in June of this year with a suggested price of R$ 360.
Mattel has invested in lines that express more representation, with dolls with different body types, skin tones, hair, eyes and looks. In addition, it still highlights outstanding women in their professions.
This month, Barbie also presented her 2022 collection with doll with hearing aids and Ken with vitiligo.
“It’s important for kids to see themselves reflected in the product and encourage play with dolls that don’t look like them to help them understand and celebrate the importance of inclusion,” said Mattel Vice President and Global Head of Barbie, Lisa McKnight.
