Trouble for Shakira – Referred to a tax evasion trial

by

A Spanish court has rejected an appeal by Colombian singer Shakira and upheld an earlier court ruling that found there was “sufficient evidence” to refer her to tax evasion charges, according to a court document.

Prosecutors allege that the singer did not pay up to 14.5 million euros in income tax earned between 2012 and 2014.

Prosecutors say Shakira was living in a region of Catalonia (northern Spain) at the time, although representatives of the Colombian pop star claim that she only moved to Spain in 2015, and has since met all her tax obligations.

The new ruling is a ratification of a previous court ruling issued in July 2021. The court will now have to formally refer it to trial and set a date for its execution.

Her legal team said in a statement today that it would continue to defend its case with sound legal arguments.

“On tax matters, Shakira has always been impeccable in all countries where she had to pay taxes and trusted and faithfully followed the recommendations of the best experts and advisers,” the statement said.

The 45-year-old singer has been married since 2011 to Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique and they have two children.
