In 1978, UNESCO announced its first list of 12 World Heritage Sites, a title widely considered the gold standard for landmarks around the world. Today, a total of 1,154 sites – 897 cultural, 218 natural and 39 mixed – have earned a place on the famous list.
To find out which ones are the most popular today, Design Bundles studied how many times sites have been added as Instagram tags in 2021.
Rome
At the top of the list is the historic center of Rome, with about 61.2 million posts, followed by Rio de Janeiro with about 45 million and Venice and its lagoon with almost 25.8 million.
Venice
The list of the 10 most popular sites of world cultural heritage also includes Kiev with about 21.9 million, the historic center of Florence with 21.5 million, the historic center of Prague with 17.7 million, Budapest with 14.7 million, Brasilia with 13.3 million, the historic center of St. Petersburg with 12 million and Quito with 9.9 million. All belong to the category of cultural sites.
Prague
Of the natural sites, Yosemite National Park is in 15th place with about 4.6 million suspensions and Grand Canyon National Park is in 16th place with about 4 million suspensions. In 17th place is the old Havana with 4 million posts and in 18th the Cultural landscape of Bali with 3,985,530 posts. In 27th place is the old town of Dubrovnik in Croatia and in 29th place the Dolomites with 2.5 million posts on Instagram.
