Kevin Spacey must pay compensation of R$175m after harassment reports

by

Actor and comedian Kevin Spacey, 62, and his producers were ordered to pay MRC, producer responsible for the series “House of Cards” (Netflix), approximately US$31 million, about R$175 million, for breach of contract after the various allegations of sexual harassment against the comedian.

The decision was taken 13 months ago, according to The New York Times, however, it was only made public this Monday (22), when the producer’s lawyers filed a petition in a California court to confirm the decision.

On the Netflix series, Spacey played the main character, politician Frank Underwood. In addition, he worked as an executive producer on the project, which ran for six seasons between 2013 and 2018.

The first public indictment against Spacey came in the year 2017, when the last season of “House of Cards” was filmed. At the time, actor Anthony Rapp accused the comedian of making a sexual advance on him in 1986, when he was 14 years old.

MRC and Netflix then suspended production on the series while investigations were conducted. Later, in December 2017, new charges were brought against Spacey, including by members of the “House of Cards” team, so the producer and streaming platform fired the series’ actor.

At the time, MRC claimed that Spacey’s behavior caused the company to lose millions of dollars already spent developing, writing and filming the final season. Also, the series would have less revenue as the season had to be shortened to eight episodes.

Spacey’s attorney declined to comment on the ruling. In a statement, the MRC said: “The safety of our employees, facilities and work environments is of paramount importance to the MRC and why we choose to demand accountability.”
