A famous Indian rapper, also known in communities that migrated to Canada and the United Kingdom, was shot dead on Sunday (29) in the state of Punyab, in northwest India, police said on Monday (30), citing the ” gang rivalry” as the cause of the murder.

Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu — known by the name Sidhu Moose Wala to his 11 million YouTube followers — was driving his SUV when he was attacked by people in two or three vehicles who fired about 30 shots at him, according to police.

The murder appears to be a “gang rivalry”, said Punjab Police Chief Viresh Kumar Bhawra. A Canadian-based gangster known as Goldy Brar “claimed responsibility” for the bombing “on behalf of Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang,” he added.

Moose Wala, 28, rose to fame in his Punyab region with his rap videos in which he criticized rival singers and politicians. The rapper presented himself as a man who fights for justice and the dignity of the residents of the region.

In 2022, he ran in the Punyab regional elections as a candidate for the main opposition party, but was unsuccessful. Sidhu Moose Wala’s rivals took the opportunity to accuse him of glorifying guns, Sij nationalism and gang culture.

His big hits like “Legend”, “Old Skool”, “Devil” and “Just Listen” are among the most popular music videos in India.
