Orban: No oil compromise at present – Commission irresponsible

by

The Prime Minister of Hungary Victor Orban said on Monday that does not exist “at the moment” an acceptable “compromise solution” to the European embargo on Russian oil, calling for more guarantees for its country’s supply.

However, Victor Orban said in Brussels that the new version of the draft conclusions on the Russian oil embargo is a “good approach”, as it provides for the exclusion of oil transportation through pipelines. However, it has pledged to seek guarantees that Hungary will be able to buy offshore oil. if the supply through the pipelines is interrupted.

“The problem for us, which we are fighting for today, is that if something happens to Russian oil delivered via pipeline (…) if oil does not come, then we should have the right to buy” oil that will be shipped. “This is the guarantee we need,” he said.

The Hungarian Prime Minister even criticized for “Irresponsible behavior” the European Commission on the proposal for sanctions, which was formalized without “appropriate negotiations” with the Member States.

Budapest introduces today more than 60% of its oiland 85% of its natural gas, from Russia and the Hungarian Prime Minister insists that there should be no question of an oil embargo on Summit meeting. The Czech Republic, Slovakia and Bulgaria face a similar problem.

Low expectations for an agreement on the sixth package of sanctions within the next 48 hours were expressed by the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen approaching the emergency Summit meeting in Brussels.
