Eddie Redmain: It was a mistake to play a trans woman in “The Girl from Denmark”

by

Eddie Redmain referred to his decision to play a trans woman in the 2015 film The Danish Girl, saying it was a “mistake” to accept the role.

In Tom Hooper’s film, Redmain played painter Lily Elbe, one of the first known trans people to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

When the cast of the film was announced, there were reactions and negative comments about the non-selection of a trans female actress for the role.

In a new interview with The Sunday Times, the British actor was asked about the role and whether he would accept to play him, if he accepted a similar proposal today.

“No, I would not accept it now,” he replied. “I made this film with the best of intentions, but I think it was wrong.”

“The biggest discussion about the frustrations surrounding the choice of odds is because a lot of people do not have a place at the table. “Inequalities must be eliminated, otherwise we will continue to have these discussions.”

Last year, the actor revealed that he wrote a letter to J. K. Rowling when the author was widely criticized for her comments about trans people.

Book author Harry Potter has been accused of transphobia after posting a series of controversial tweets.

While Redmain initially distanced himself from Rowling’s comments, he said he was shocked by the “poison” that was thrown at the author on social media.
