Titian’s “man in a black beret” was found two decades later

The Italian police unit responsible for cultural heritage announced that he found one portrait of the renaissance painter Titian which had been lost for almost 20 years.

The work of the 16th century, entitled «Portrait of a man with a black beret» (Ritratto di gentiluomo con berretto nero) was first lost two decades ago from an unknown location. After his disappearance in 2004, the authorities believed that had been transferred to Switzerland illegally.

It has now been discovered by part of her Turin Cultural Heritage Unit of the Italian state police.

The Renaissance painter was active in the 16th century as a member of the Venetian school. Gained a reputation for performance of aristocratic and mythical themes in dramatic style and served as court painter to Italian nobles and members of the Hapsburg dynasty of Austria before his death in 1576.

The work was presented by the Italian state at an official ceremony on May 19 in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, where it had been transported for rehabilitation and was held at a local studio in Asti.

The police did not release details about him original owner and the location where the painting was located.

The police investigates two Swiss citizensnone of whom were named by officials, for the theft of the painting, according to reports in the Italian and international press.

Its value is calculated over seven million dollars.
