Turkey considers that Sweden and Finland join NATO poses risk to Alliance security and futurewrites Recep Tayyip Erdogan in an article in the Economist.

“We have every right to expect these countries, which will expect NATO’s second largest army to rush to their defense under Article 5, to prevent the recruitment, fundraising and propaganda activities of the PKK, which the EU “and the United States considers it a terrorist entity,” he said.

It says Ankara wants to crack down on the activities of all terrorist organizations in the candidate countries and extradite members of those organizations to agree to join NATO. It also called for the support of Sweden and Finland in the counter-terrorism operations of NATO members.

“If they do not take these necessary measures, Turkey will not change its position “On this issue,” said President Erdogan.

In addition, he stressed that all forms of arms embargo, such as that of Sweden on Turkey, are “incompatible with the spirit of military cooperation under the umbrella of NATO.”

The Turkish leader continues: “Where Sweden and Finland stand on the concerns and sensitivities of other countries’ national security will determine the extent to which Turkey would like to be an ally of these countries.”

Mr Erdogan says Turkey is a “proud and necessary” member of the Alliance, a “Stabilizing force and power of good” in the Middle East, Caucasus and Black Sea.

He cites the positive contribution of his country in maintaining NATO’s power and considers that Turkey’s occasional position regarding the position that the Alliance must take is justified.

He complains that the allies remember the importance of turkey only in turbulent times and notes that they mistakenly believed that long-term stability could be achieved without Turkey.

Criticizes Macron’s phrase in 2019 about NATO dead brainstorming and comments that “the same guys questioned the role of Turkey within NATO “. He describes such views as “a mixture of impressive pious desires and extreme strategic myopia”.
