Images from a new documentary reveal a different side of Queen Elizabeth II. Elizabeth: The Unseen Queen shows hundreds of clips that are being seen publicly for the first time, as part of the celebrations of its platinum jubilee – of 70 years of reign.

The film shows the beginning of his life, from when he was still a baby until his coronation in 1953.

In a message recorded for the film, the 96-year-old monarch said she loves home videos as they capture “precious family moments”.

Some of the new images were shot by the Queen herself, showing family members like her parents and the Duke of Edinburgh.

In one image, taken in 1940, young Princess Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret dance in blue and white polka-dotted dresses in front of their corgi dog.

Another video, from the same year, shows the future queen falling from a chair in the garden of the Royal Lodge Windsor while playing with her father, King George VI.

A third image, this one from 1939, shows Princess Elizabeth and her sister smiling at the camera as they both spend time on the Balmoral estate.

Other footage from the documentary shows Princess Elizabeth smiling into her engagement ring shortly after Prince Philip’s marriage proposal.

In a message recorded at Windsor Castle to introduce the new documentary, the Queen said: “Cameras have always been a part of our lives. I think there’s a difference in watching a home movie, when you know who’s on the other side of the lens. , holding the camera. It increases the feeling of intimacy”.

“Like many families, my parents wanted to keep a record of our precious moments together. And when it was our turn to be with our own family, we did the same.”

“I’ve always enjoyed capturing family moments. Private pictures can often show the fun behind the formality.”

“I hope almost every family has a collection of photographs or movies to remember precious moments, but over time they are replaced by newer images and more recent memories.”

“You always hope that future generations will find you interesting, and perhaps they will be surprised that you were once young too.”

BBC Studios, the film’s production company, reviewed over 400 reels of film, privately owned by the Royal Collection in the vaults of the British Film Institute, and discovered lost newsreels given to the Queen and behind-the-scenes footage of official events.

The filmmakers also heard more than three hundred speeches from the Queen over 80 years.
