Luciano Szafir remains hospitalized 16 days after surgery to remove colostomy

Luciano Szafir, 53, was one of the most felt absences at the press release of the second season of the reality show Os Szafirs, on the pay channel E!. That’s because the actor, presenter and businessman remains hospitalized after the reversal surgery to remove the colostomy bag.

The operation was performed on May 16 and, at the time, was considered a success by doctors at Copa D’or, in the south of Rio, who transferred him from the ICU to the room the next day. The scholarship had been placed last year, after he had serious sequelae from a hospitalization for Covid.

“He’s fine, but he’s still hospitalized,” said Beth Szafir, Luciano’s mother, to F5. “He’s more concerned about the kids [Mikael e David], who are missing their father and mother a lot. I’m going to Campinas tomorrow [onde eles moram] to stay with them. Luciano will be fine, God willing. And God will.”

The grandmother, by the way, said that she has spent a lot of time with her grandchildren while her son recovers. “As Luciano is in the hospital, I keep going to his house [ficar com as crianças]”, he said during the event. “I just didn’t go today, I’m here happily, but tomorrow morning I will. While Luciano can’t, I’ll be with the kids every day. It’s a thank you.”

She says that her son’s surgery turned out to be bigger than they expected. “It was very serious,” she says. “And now, after 16 days, he is still hospitalized. He had the colostomy removed, and since it can’t be done by laparoscopy, he had to really open it up to do something more serious. It was a surgery that took a long time, about eight hours.”

Beth says it took a lot of strength throughout her son’s struggle for life. “It was a horror,” she confessed to her. “I’m that Jewish mother myself, who worries — although it’s not just Jewish mothers who worry.”

“Luciano is a wonderful person and, at the moment, he is very worried about his children, about his and Luhanna’s absence. [Melloni]who is his wife, who is directly with him in the hospital”, he said. “I’m going there to help, but I confess it’s been very difficult.

“I wish it had been with me, not with him,” said the businesswoman. “But, in the end, it’s not us who choose.”

In June 2021, Luciano Szafir was diagnosed with Covid-19 (the second of three times he was infected with the coronavirus) and was hospitalized for about a month. The ex-husband of Xuxa Meneghel and father of the presenter’s only daughter, Sasha, was intubated due to complications from the coronavirus.

The following month, Szafir had to undergo colostomy surgery in the bowel region. He suffered organ perforation due to the use of anticoagulants to treat a pulmonary embolism caused by the disease.

A colostomy is a type of opening in the large intestine for dropping stool or urine and stool into a pouch, when the bowel cannot be attached to the anus. There were 10 months with the type of collection bag in the belly and the wait for the reversal surgery, as the doctors attested that Luciano Szafir had fully recovered from the initial intervention in the intestine a short time ago.

Before the new surgery, Szafir, who came to parade at São Paulo Fashion Week, in November last year, showing the colostomy bag, announced that he intends to continue fighting for the causes of ostomates.

According to the Ministry of Health, there are more than 400 thousand ostomized people in the country and there is even a National Day, November 16, established by Law 11.506/2007 to disseminate information that contributes to combating prejudice against people who use the procedure of ostomy.
