The Athens International Film Festival – Premiere Nights solemnly announces the official opening of the 12th Athens Open Air Film Festival with the pan-Hellenic premiere of the film “The Lost Daughter” by Maggie Gyllenhaalin the presence of the director, the acclaimed actor Peter Sarsgard, and many Greek contributors.
The 12th Athens Open Air Film Festival begins its summer cinematic journey, in co-organization with the Organization of Culture, Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA) on Tuesday 14 June 2022 (at 21.15) at the Attica Grove Theater “Katina Paxinou”, hosting in a nationwide premiere the candidate for 3 Oscars (A ‘and B’ Female Role, Adapted Screenplay) and honored with a Screenplay Award at the Venice Film Festival, a film by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Admission for the public is free.
The “Lost Daughter”, based on one of Italy’s most popular novels, Elena Ferrante, is a remarkable directorial debut for the American actress. Filmed in Spetses, the film has an excellent cast (Olivia Coleman, Peter Sarsgaard, Ed Harris and Dakota Johnson to the upcoming Jesse Buckley and Paul Mescal) and has already gained international acclaim from audiences and critics. From the Greek side, the film features Nikos Poursanidis, Panos Koronis, Alexandros Mylonas, Konstantinos Samaa and Spyros Maragoudakis.
In the film, Leda (Olivia Coleman) enjoys her lonely vacation in Spetses, when she gradually becomes involved with a young mother (Dakota Johnson) and her daughter, whom she meets daily on the same beach. As a mother and daughter have a special and intense relationship, Leda is overwhelmed by the memories and confused feelings of love, confusion and intensity of her own early motherhood. A mysterious impulse forces her to face in person the unconventional choices she made as a new mother and, above all, the consequences of those choices.
The film will be released on June 30 in Greek theaters by the company SPENTZOS FILM, while it will premiere next time on Novacinema channels.
