Matthew McConaughey urges gun control after Texas massacre

by

Actor Matthew McConaughey, 52, was at the White House on Tuesday (7) calling for legislation that would allow greater control over access to guns in the United States. The speech comes weeks after a gunman killed at least 19 children and two adults at a school in the town of Uvalde, Texas, where he was born.

McConaughey was at the White House, accompanied by his wife, Brazilian model Camilas Alves, to meet with President Joe Biden. After the meeting, the actor spoke in the press room that he and his wife had spent the last few days in contact with the parents of the dead children.

The emotional actor described the lives of some of the victims murdered on May 24 at Robb Elementary School, which is less than a kilometer from the kindergarten where his mother taught.

According to McConaughey, , one of the victims had to be identified by his green shoes. He asked his wife to hold the shoes, which featured a heart that the girl had drawn by hand on the rubber toe cap.

“Those same green Converse on her feet turned out to be the only clear evidence that could identify her after the shooting,” the actor said in a choked voice.

The actor also stated that he is not anti-guns and that it was in “Uvalde where he learned the responsible possession of weapons”. He emphasized that new gun laws are needed. “We need to restore our American values and we need responsible gun ownership.”
