According to the complaint filed in the federal court of Los Angeles, Paramount Global did not regain the rights from the family of Ehud Yonay for the article “Top Guns” before the release of the new film.
The author’s family, whose article inspired the 1986 film “Top Gun” starring Tom Cruise in 1986, has filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures for copyright infringement in this year’s sequel. Top Gun: Maverick.
According to the complaint filed in the federal court of Los Angeles, Paramount Global did not regain the rights from his family before the release of the new film. Ehud Yonai for his article “Top Guns”which was published in the 1983 issue of California magazine.
Sos and Yuval Yonai, who live in Israel and are respectively widow and son of Ehud Yonai, report that the original Paramount rights agreement expired in January 2020. Paramount, they claim, deliberately ignored the fact that to themselves.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, including some profits from “Top Gun: Maverick,” and to prevent Paramount from distributing the film or other sequels.
The movie Top Gun: Maverick is the biggest box office success of the year, with $ 291 million in revenue in North America and $ 548.6 million worldwide in its first 10 days of release.
According to Deadline, a Paramount spokesman responded by saying:
“The allegations are baseless and we will defend ourselves vigorously.”
