One of the most popular operas of all time, Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca”, returns for four performances at the Herodion, as part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, in an impressive production directed, sets and costumes of the distinguished Argentine opera director Hugo de Ana. Starring great Greeks and foreign soloists with international recognition, such as, among others, Christine Opolais, Liana Haroutounian, Ramon Vargas, Giorgio Beroutzi, Dimitris Platanias, Tassis Christogiannopoulos and others. Conducted by French chief musician Philippe Eugene.
THE Floria Tosca, an opera diva, is a woman madly in love, who is pathologically jealous of her partner. THE Baron Scarpia, a dark man with absolute power, delights in the pain of his victims. Between the two is the lover and pure patriot Mario Cavarantosi, who is driven to death, not for his ideas, but because he possesses Tosca, whom Scarpia desires. The engine is well set up: no one will escape Scarpia’s traps.
In this operatic thriller, which had its world premiere in 1900 in Rome, the insane passions are underlined by Puccini’s evocative music. It was first presented in Greece in 1942 by ELS, with Maria Callas in the homonymous role.
Tosca’s narrative plot includes a number of human issues: love, jealousy, perverted lust, belief in friendship. And despite the fact that death seals the play, nevertheless the essence of the plot of the play is the lifeless division of the heroine who is faced with a nightmarish dilemma. One of the reasons why Tosca remains to this day one of the most popular operas is the characteristics of the central heroine. Tosca is the model of the opera diva, both with her song and her behavior. All her manipulations and emotions evoke the pre-eminently operatic stereotype of the vain lyric singer, surrendered to her strong instincts.
The Orchestra, the Choir and the Children’s Choir of ELS participate in the educational mission.
