The budget project 1,600,000 eurosis included in the Operational Program “Western Greece 2014-2020” and is implemented by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Etoloakarnania and Lefkada.
As stated by the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni: “The archeological site of Stratos was the largest city of Akarnania, and its ancient theater, with a capacity of about 6,000 spectators, is the largest of the five already discovered theaters of Etolokarnania. The restoration project that is in progress, aims to combine both the protection of the theater and its promotion as a monument, as well as its utilization and return to the local community through reuse.
On the basis of the newly approved architectural study, interventions are foreseen for the protection of the ancient architectural members or carvings on the rock in the hollow and for the promotion of the architectural members of the stands up to the perimeter corridor. The interventions also include the addition of new material to the lower steps of the cavity, behind the chairs and up to the zones of promotion, registration or fastening of slopes.
All ancient limestone architectural elements will be reused after being reassembled in the correct locations. Also, interventions are provided in the cavity to serve the movement of visitors and the view of the monument. In addition to the interventions on the monument, in the rest of the space are provided, among others: rearrangement of stones after studying the scattered material, excavations in places where interventions are proposed, formation of new entrances to the archeological site, placement of three-dimensional signs.
