A 90-year-old woman who was attacked by a bear while sitting on her front porch managed to get the bear out of her lawn chair.

Alta Williams was resting at her home in Seville, Tennessee on Wednesday, and a black bear was approaching. There are three Cubs nearby.

-I sat here and I haven’t been here for more than a couple of minutes. I heard myself clearly. “It shook me up,” Williams told WVLT.

Williams said the bear “turned right into my face” when he used a lawn chair to keep it away.

He left the meeting with only a scratch on his arm. He was treated at the hospital for his injuries and bandaged around him.

“I may not be here, so I praise the Lord afterwards,” Williams said.

Williams said he met another bear at his home near Smoky Mountain National Park.

“Last year I had a bear with three cubs,” he said. “It could have been the same bear, but it didn’t bother me.”

He said the bear had gotten away from him in the past.

“It’s really unusual because they’re scared of you,” he said of his recent incident.

According to Matt Cameron, a spokesman for the Tennessee Wildlife Service, Williams acted as he should.

“When he responded, that’s exactly what we were telling people,” Cameron told the station. “Yell at them and make noise so they spread. To intimidate them. How he responded he pushed them back. He could have saved his life…”

The bear, which had just attacked Williams, turned on a more aggressive neighbor.

“He left the area after his mother’s bear attacked the victim and, as we were told, he blamed another neighbor for shooting him,” Cameron said. “When that happened, there was no other way but to put her down.

The Tennessee Wildlife Service protocol is to euthanize bears in contact with humans in residential and other densely populated areas.
