The announcement of the Ministry of Culture in detail

The Ministry of Culture and Sports shields the archeological site of the Acropolis and the Slopes with modern security means.

The project concerns the installation of a modern integrated system for capturing, analyzing, storing and managing images and related data. The design of the system follows the basic principles of effective detection, the reliability of the operation of the system in normal conditions and in conditions of predictable problems, the automated and easy-to-use operation. Regarding the passive safety of the site, it is foreseen the replacement and strengthening of parts of the fencing of the archeological site of the Acropolis Slopes in sensitive places with increased storage requirements and where the fencing is considered insufficient. The studies, on which the Central Archaeological Council unanimously gave its opinion, were prepared by the competent Services of the Ministry.

The Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, stated: “A priority for the Ministry of Culture and Sports is the protection and promotion of the Acropolis monument, but also the upgrading of the services provided by utilizing every available financial and technological means. The upgrade and strengthening of the security measures of the archeological site are part of the holistic approach of protection of the world radiation of the monument. The installation of this modern and integrated security system, with possibilities for additional expansion, protection from weather, environmental conditions and vandalism, significantly enhances the level of security of the Archaeological site of the Acropolis and the Slopes. The Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens ensures the implementation of the project with absolute respect for the monumental ensemble, but also with the least aesthetic burden. At the level of passive security, the strengthening of the perimeter security is consequential, as the archeological site of the Acropolis, in addition to the special requirements that he presents for its orderly and safe operation, is largely dependent on the archaeological site of Klitia that surrounds it. , which is the introductory and protective zone of the Holy Rock, and shows increased traffic “.

The proposed active security system is based on the subsystems for capture, analysis and management of image and related data, access control to selected points through credentials, alarm for protection against burglary of selected areas, loudspeakers, perimeter detection, luggage control with X-ray, communication of security personnel. The system has been designed with the possibility of seamless further development, if and when needed.

In terms of passive security, the area of Klitia for the most part (South Klitis, East, West and the eastern part of North Klitos) is fenced. However, the westernmost part of the North Slope, from the new entrance formed to the building of the Acropolis, due to the intense morphological relief and the dense vegetation it presents, requires measures to strengthen the fence for more effective protection.
