The old maxim that fashion reflects the times we are living in is justified once again this winter. The feeling of relief with the end of the pandemic, combined with the increasing visibility of agendas linked to diversity and the LGBTQIA+ cause, resulted in a season with multicolored trends.
And the colors come vibrant, quite different from the chromatic monotony common to the colder months of other years. According to fashion curator and consultant Lilian Pacce, coming out of social isolation and returning to life more or less as it was before brought this desire to invest in brighter tones – and the fashion industry has already realized this. “Luxury brands even created their own colors, such as Pink PP by Valentino or green by Bottega Veneta”, says Pacce.
The trend, already seen since the summer, is called “dopamine dressing” because it has a positive effect on people’s mood. Businesswoman Paula Lozano, 49, owns a clothing store and says that she actually feels this new wave: knitted pieces and jackets in colorful tones are among her business’s best sellers. “The secret is to test and experiment,” she says.
Fashion director at Hooks magazine, Evely Oliveira adds another factor to the trend for vibrant colors this winter: nostalgia. “This colorful movement has a lot of influence from a rescue from the 1980s and 1990s,” she says. According to Evely, blue, lime green and pink – the former hot pink – appear in knitwear, bags and accessories.
The flashy colors are also seen in makeup, especially in the eye region. “This year, the trend is the graphic outline, to get away from the classic black. It’s cool to use up to two or three shades in the eyes”, says Talita Akemy, makeup artist and digital influencer. For her, using colorful makeup combined with monochromatic clothes is also a good option.
Also a makeup artist, Kátia Anjos agrees with the idea that fashion is inserted within the historical and social context of an era — and that includes, yes, the trends that are on the rise. “The wave of acceptance of diversity and individuality has certainly influenced the return of vibrant colors,” she says. For Kátia, makeup goes far beyond aesthetics. “It’s also an important expression tool.”
To help understand (and, who knows, join the trend), fashion experts Lilian Pacce and Evely Oliveira, and makeup artists Kátia Anjos and Talita Akemy selected some tips. Talita even provided a tutorial. Check out:
