Renata Capucci reveals that she has Parkinson’s: ‘I don’t want you to feel sorry for me’

by

Journalist and presenter Renata Capucci, 49, from Fantástico (Globo), revealed on Sunday (26) on the podcast Isso é Fantástico that she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease four years ago – which affects movement and causes tremors. The episode spoke of degenerative diseases such as the case of actress Guta Stresser, 49, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis last week.

Capucci said it was time for her to break free and speak up because living with a secret like that is bad. “You feel like you’re living a fake life because part of you is one way and you keep hiding the other part from other people, in my case most people, because I’m a public person,” she said.

The journalist said that she was diagnosed with the disease while participating in the musical reality show Popstar (Globo), of which she was a finalist. “I started with the symptoms a little earlier. I started to limp and people would say to me: ‘Why are you limping, Renata?’. And I would say: ‘I’m not limping’. I didn’t realize I was limping .”

At the time, she said she started doing physical therapy and osteopathy, but nothing changed. One Sunday she was at home watching the sixth show of Popstar and her arm came up on its own and stiffened. Married to a doctor, Capucci was taken to a hospital that had a neurological emergency and was diagnosed with the disease. “That fell like an anvil on top of my head.”

Capucci said he is proud of his trajectory and the way he faces the disease. She said that four years after her diagnosis she is well and happy. “I don’t want to become a martyr. I don’t want to be pitied,” he said.

The journalist explained that she does all kinds of exercises she can, takes medication and has a positive life, doesn’t feel diminished and does all the articles. “Today, I’m in stage five. I look this disease in the face and I say: ‘Mr Parkinson, I have you, you don’t have me,'” Capucci said.

According to the Ministry of Health, Parkinson’s is a neurological disease that affects a person’s movements and has no cure. It causes tremors, slowness of movement, muscle stiffness, imbalance, as well as changes in speech and writing.

The disease is divided into five stages ranging from mild symptoms to dependence for locomotion. But not every patient will go through every stage because it is variable according to each patient.
