What to plant in your garden or on your balcony.

Summer has already entered our lives for good. Relaxing afternoons on the terrace with a refreshing drink, check, garden decoration with rustic elements, check, but what we must learn to deal with are the various insects and specifically the mosquitoes making their appearance this season.

We have gathered the 8 best suggestions, and to spend time doing gardeningeither on your balcony or in your garden, and to protect yourself from “annoying” visitors.

Mint

First of all, mint is very popular for its aroma and for its use in cooking, but it can also be very useful with its insect repellent properties. When planted in a pot it helps protect against mosquitoes, flies and ants.

TIP: Mint is suitable for sunny areas, and ideal when planted in shady / semi-shady places. But it is not resistant to north winds and frost.

Royal

It is one of the integral parts of our daily use, and yet it can work wonders in repelling insects and mosquitoes. We plant it in semi-shady places sheltered from the wind.

TIP: Basil is at its peak in bright places, but may be sensitive to direct sunlight. In winter it needs protection from cold, frost or snow.

Arbaroriza

Cousin of the geranium, it is not only used in desserts, but also has a significant repellent action against insects. At the same time, it grows very quickly in sunny or semi-shady places.

TIP: Soak a little juniper root with alcohol in a jar for 2-3 weeks and use the liquid to spray your home for best results.

Garlic

Although most people find its pungent odor repulsive, garlic has perhaps the best insect repellent properties. For its ideal action it should be planted in a dry, mild climate, without intense frosts or humidity.

TIP: It needs light and fluffy soil to thrive.

Lavender

It is widely known that lavender has excellent insect repellent properties, as we know it from its use in the cabinets of our homes against moths. Thus, if lavender is planted in a sunny place or semi-shady places, it can also help repel mosquitoes.

TIP: Lavender withstands the heat and dry environment of summer and the cold of winter, being an ideal solution for all seasons. To thrive, it is better to choose sunny spots with southern or eastern exposure.

Marigold

A beautiful flower with yellow and orange flowers, while it has always been known that it is planted together with basil for effective repulsion of insects in vegetable gardens as it protects them. It thrives in places with constant sunshine and can be easily adapted to semi-shady areas.

TIP: It is easily planted in all soils, although it prefers the most fertile, enriched with manure.

Louisa or Lemongrass or Honeysuckle

It has a special aroma reminiscent of lemon. Especially for those who are interested in its soothing properties, the plant helps especially in mosquito bites. Quite resistant to high temperatures but also to very low.

TIP: It is good to plant in a pot alone, while if it will be planted in a garden, it would be good to have a distance of half a meter from the other aromatic plants, due to its fast growth.

Citronella

Thespian “tool” for its insect repellent properties, since it protects against mosquitoes. It is important, however, that it can cause allergies, so make sure the plant does not bother you before planting. It grows quickly in sunny places, but can also tolerate shade.

TIP: Avoid planting it in areas with very cold or severe frost because it suffers.
