Brooke put his own unique stamp on the theater, overturning many established conventions.

The pioneering British theater director passed away at the age of 97 Peter Brook. Brook, who had lived in France since 1974, died in Paris on Saturday.

He had won numerous Tony and Emmy Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, a Praemium Imperiale and a Prix Italia, and was described as “the greatest living theater director”

Brooke put his own unique stamp on the theater, overturning many established conventions. In interviews, he himself had opened fire against the academism that destroyed the British theatre, leaving no room for innovation.

His productions, starring some of the most distinguished actors, thrilled and shocked audiences.

The son of Latvian immigrants, he was born in west London in March 1925.

He had no theatrical background, but after studying at Oxford University his talent was quickly spotted. At the age of just 20 he was appointed director of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

With the Royal Shakespeare Company, Brooke directed the first English-language production of Marat/Sade in 1964. It opened on Broadway in 1965 and won the Tony Award for Best Play and Brooke for Best Director.

In 1974, Brook moved to the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris, where he remained artistic director until 2000. From there, he toured the world.
