Tyreese Maxey scores 40 as Sixers beat Celtics 117-116 in opener

by

With an impressive performance from Tyrese Maxey, the Sixers got the NBA season off to a perfect start, beating the Celtics 117-116 in a thrilling opener finale.

Maxey scored 40 points, leading his team to an upset in the final minutes.

Next to him was VJ Edgcomb, who made an impressive debut, scoring 34 points, a record for a player in his first NBA appearance since 1959, when the legendary Wilt Chamberlain scored 43.

The Sixers led by four points with 22 seconds left, but Edgecomb missed two shots with the score at 117-116, giving the Celtics a chance to steal the win. However, Peyton Pritchard missed both of his attempts in the closing seconds, allowing the home team to celebrate the victory.

Joel Embiid returned to action for the first time since last February, but still looked unprepared. Last year’s NBA MVP had 4 points (1/9 shooting) and 6 rebounds in 20 minutes of action in an adjustment game after a difficult year with foot and knee injuries.

For the Celtics, Jaylen Brown scored 25 points in his return from a thigh injury, while Derrick White also had 25 points, 13 of which came in the third quarter, when Boston went on a 16-0 run to take a 94-84 lead.

Although the Celtics struggled without Jayson Tatum, who was watching from the bench with a ruptured Achilles tendon, they battled to the end.
