The great fire of July 3 passed through the Mycenaean cemetery at Portes Achaia, but did not damage the antiquities, only the protective canopies of the tombs and the wooden handles for visitors, the Ministry of Culture clarifies in a statement, following reports in Media about destruction of monuments.

Because there is a strong rumor about the alleged destruction of the Mycenaean cemetery at Portes Achaia, due to a forest fire on Sunday, July 3 AD, the following is highlighted, according to the report of the Head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Achaia Dr. A. Koumousis:
1. The archaeological site was exemplary cleaned, a fact that contributed decisively together with the effort of the Fire Brigade to its prevention and rescue.
2. The antiquities of the site did not suffer any damage, neither the visitor routes, the seating areas of the site, nor the modern building facilities
3.The fire extinguishing system is not damaged and all the fire hydrants remained intact, the tank etc.
4. The protective canopies of the graves were damaged, with destruction of the superstructure and the covering, while the metal parts of the canopies’ frame were not damaged.
5. The wooden handrails in the visitor structures were destroyed.
6. The Ephorate of Antiquities is already taking care of the replacement of the damaged parts of the roofs and handrails, in order to protect the Mycenaean burial ensembles.
