The World’s Best Cities Index aims to “show the world the places that locals say are the best” and highlight “the things that make a city a great place to visit and live in”.
Edinburgh has been crowned the world’s best city for 2022, according to Time Out’s World’s Best Cities Index 2022, which is based on the responses of 20,000 city dwellers from around the world.
The aim of the index is to “show the world the places that locals say are the best” and highlight “the things that make a city a great place to visit and live”.
So, according to the research, Edinburgh is “the most beautiful city in the world” (according to 95% of its residents) and first among cities where you can walk (according to 93% of the responses). As Time Out notes, it’s ideal for travelers who want to discover historical sights, architecture and beautiful spots on foot. In addition, the Scottish city’s restaurants and bars are constantly evolving.
In second place on the list was Chicago, as it was named the second best city in the world based on its restaurants and bars. 95% of respondents answered that there is always something to do in the area of arts and culture in Chicago.
Medellín, Colombia may have once been known as the special hometown of the “King of Cocaine” Pablo Escobar, but today it is the third best city in the world. According to Time Out, it is the place to visit for those who want to have a good time. Medellin scores very well for restaurants and bars (97%), nightlife and entertainment (90%) and sense of community (94%).
Another Scottish city, Glasgow, is in fourth place. Glasgow has been described as the friendliest city in the world, with 78% of locals agreeing. It’s also the second most affordable city, with 87% saying it wasn’t too expensive.
The top5 is completed by Amsterdam, which according to the research is the first city in the world based on the ease of expressing who you are and the second most progressive city on the planet.
Athens
Athens is ranked 35th because, as Time Out puts it, “where else in the world can you find lively rooftop bars overlooking temples built by ancient civilizations and dazzling beaches just 20 minutes away.”
Trendy boutique hotels popping up on almost every high street, restaurants specializing in everything from tacos to croissants, and cool bars help make Athens known not only for its history, but also for its contemporary creative energy.
90% of Athenians praised the city’s food and drink and 80% spoke positively of its nightlife. 77% did not rate the Greek capital as expensive, meaning Athens is the third least expensive city in this year’s Time Out survey.
