Amber Heard appeals ruling she defamed ex-husband Johnny Depp

by

Actress Amber Heard filed an appeal today against a Virginia court ruling that she defamed her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, in an opinion piece in which he said he was a victim of sexual assault.

Heard’s attorneys filed an appeal with the Virginia Court of Appeals, asking that the June 1 ruling be overturned. In that trial, which lasted six weeks, seven jurors concluded that Heard defamed Depp and awarded him $10.35 million in damages. They also ruled that Heard was also defamed and awarded her $2 million in damages.

“We believe the court made errors that prevented a fair verdict under the First Amendment,” a representative for the actress told Reuters.

Depp’s lawyers did not immediately respond to a request from the agency for comment on this development.

During the trial, Depp said he never hit or sexually assaulted Heard and claimed she was the one who became violent during their relationship. Heard admitted she slapped Depp, but only to defend herself or her sister.
