Caffeine and anxiety: An addictive relationship

by

Your favorite coffee can be your anti-stress medicine.

Morning coffee is a ritual for some. There are people, myself included, who simply cannot function without coffee. That if they don’t feel the caffeine flowing through them, the brain doesn’t start working.

And especially, if you belong to the category of people who are very stressed and anxious, coffee is the antidote.

However, most experts agree that caffeine does not particularly help in situations of intense anxiety and therefore recommend that those suffering from anxiety disorders limit it.

The truth

The fact is that coffee contains a lot of caffeine. The recommended dosage of daily coffee consumption is therefore 400mg daily. Of course if you are pregnant the dose is halved.

It is also a fact that excessive caffeine consumption can cause unwanted side effects, such as tachycardia, headache, irritability and of course, insomnia.

However, if you suffer from anxiety disorders, then caffeine can significantly aggravate your condition. Research has shown that people with such disorders are more sensitive to caffeine, while according to other publications, these people are likely to have more severe symptoms.

Of course, each case is unique. Coffee may not affect you. But, be that as it may, you should monitor if you have any symptoms that you have not linked to the consumption of caffeine.

The solution

According to the American Psychological Association, there are ways to enjoy your favorite coffee without affecting your health.

First, avoid consuming caffeine on an empty stomach. The reason is that it increases stomach acids and causes heartburn, indigestion, and even inflammation.

Also, avoid drinking coffee six hours before bedtime. It will help you sleep better.

The most difficult part, however, is the morning coffee part. According to experts, it’s best to drink your first coffee – yes, the most precious coffee of the day – an hour after waking up. It’s hard, it’s heartless, but that’s what the experts give, because of the reduced cortisol.

And generally, what they generally indicate is that you should wean yourself off caffeine and not consume it on a daily basis. Impossible.

And yet, research shows that after a month of abstinence, many people feel better and calmer.

But if you consider this solution too extreme, then observe yourself. See if after drinking coffee, you have any discomfort or if you feel somewhat unpleasant.

Also, it is always preferable to contact your personal doctor, where he is the best person to advise you.
