“Kritamon Chrismos”: A performance once again breathes life into a place of mysticism in Samos

by

Opening on 2 August, from 19.00 until midnight, with a program full of interventions and live performances by an international group of visual artists, actors and musicians

With the exhibition “Kritamon Oracle – Kritamon Χrismos”, its first public project, KERKIS ECHO, the artistic-philosophical community of discourse in Samos established in 2021 with the aim of being in a place surrounded by the spiritual aura of Pythagoras, is introduced to the public , Mount Kerkis overlooking the Aegean Sea, to build an international poetic community of thought. In this context, artists, writers, philosophers, filmmakers, architects and visionaries of all kinds come together to develop interdisciplinary project ideas together with the people of the small mountain town of Marathokampos.

An oracle simultaneously describes the event, the message, the person, the place and the magic they accumulate. On a journey through space and time, from ideas of beauty and destruction to the uncertainty of the future, “Kritamon Oracle” will activate stories as well as visionary ideas that hover between material and immaterial artistic intervention, as well as highly sensitive perception of today.

Kritamo is a wild aromatic succulent that grows and thrives along the rocky shores of the Aegean around the sea. In the same way that the kritamo finds suitable ground to grow on the roughest surfaces, there will be special interventions and performances in the village of Marathokampos. Hybrid art forms, interventions, sculptures and new media works will be mixed with local discoveries, as well as references to ancient Greece, Pythagorean mathematics, the flora and fauna of Samos.

Thus, we encounter fabrics that carry mysterious codes, oracle messages that blow from ruined houses – from the former inhabitants or from the future?–, a ruined building in front of the monastery of Panagitsa that turns into a virtual cave, a pre-Christian prayer room, from the which Pythagoras could have spoken to his students…

In the narrow streets of Marathokampos, the artist Pollyester gives a performance singing odes about the numerous bedrooms in the houses of the small mountain town, a phenomenon that is historically found only in this area. Of course, there is no shortage of the old gods of Heraion, who left the island a long time ago. In the space that previously housed a temple of consumerism – the old supermarket – even self-illuminating reliefs of deities made of plexiglass hang. Neon-colored icons emit an eerie glow. The quiet mountain town of Marathokampos, which has shrunk from 5,000 to 900 inhabitants, is the ideal location for the ‘Kritamon Oracle’ exhibition. There you will find empty cafes, fountains, olive groves, ruins, an old basin – objects and spaces that carry a long history and call us to give them life again.

The exhibition is organized by easy!upstream, an artist collective that has been exhibiting in different locations since 2015. The exhibition ‘Kritamon Oracle’ marks the beginning of a three-year exhibition project in Marathokampos. The series is curated by artists Susi Gelb and Niko Abramidis &NE.

For the opening of “Kritamon Oracle”, which will take place on August 2nd, a program full of interventions and live performances will be presented in indoor and outdoor spaces in Marathokampos, Samos by an international group of visual artists, actors and musicians from multiple backgrounds.
