Serres: Art symposium from the municipality of Amphipolis with an eye on the Kasta mound

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport praised Mrs. Peristeris and the entire archaeological team for the important work, through which not only the region of Amphipolis but the whole of Greece emerged, as he said.

The global impact his discovery had of Kasta Mound by the archaeologist Katerina Peristeris, emphasized the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Costas Karamanlis during the opening event of the 1st Art Symposium organized by the municipality of Amphipolis.

Mr. Karamanlis praised Ms. Peristeris and the entire archaeological team for the important work, through which not only the region of Amphipolis but the whole of Greece emerged, as he said. He underlined, however, referring to the course of implementation of the projects to highlight the mound, that “from the initial enthusiasm we passed to complete discredit and from the great visibility, to abandonment”, leaving clear peaks for the development of the project during the period of SYRIZA’s government.

The minister also pointed out that from the position of the opposition, New Democracy presented a comprehensive plan that was followed step by step, when it took over the government of the country, “with the aim of the overall promotion and restoration of the burial monument, with the main goal of making the site accessible, in accordance with the timetable set by the Ministry of Culture and Minister Lina Mendoni”. He also noted that in this context many mistakes that had been made in past studies were corrected.

“The aim of the ministry is to dedicate the monument of the Kasta mound to all citizens in Greece and abroad”, noted in her greeting the general secretary of Contemporary Culture of the Ministry of Culture Eleni Doundoulakis, underlining at the same time that after the opinion of the KAS, the way is opened for the restoration of the monument and the construction of a protective shelter.
Mrs. Doundoulaki pointed out that the interest of the YPPO is overall for the entire cultural reserve of the Amphipolis area and in this context funding has been secured for the complete reconstruction and enhancement of the ancient wooden bridge as well as the creation of cultural routes.

Serron Deputy Governor Panagiotis Spyropoulos referred to the efforts made by the Region of Central Macedonia to secure the necessary funding for the restoration of the monument, underlining that despite any delays, the lost time was finally gained and the restoration work is progressing rapidly today .
The mayor of Amfipolis, Stergios Frastanlis, noted that the aim of the 1st Art Symposium, which will last until Sunday 31 July and will be developed in many areas of the municipality, is the overall promotion of art through the eyes of local artists who will frame their creations on rich history of the area that was highlighted even more after the discovery of the Kasta mound by the archaeologist Katerina Peristeri.

At the opening event, the Metropolitan of Zikhon and Nevrokopi, Mr. Ierotheos, and the Director of the UNESCO Piraeus and Islands cultural group, Giorgos Tsoukalis, also addressed a greeting.

The first day of the Symposium closed with “An evening of opera and violin” in works by: Puccini, Satie, Verdi, Theodorakis, Sakellaridis, Papathanasiou, Piazzola and Gardel by the violinist and soprano Chrysoula Mischou originally from the municipality of Amphipolis, while on the piano the accompanied by Kalliopi Altintasiotis.
