Amber Heard, 36, has hired a new team of lawyers to appeal the jury’s decision in the defamation case awarded to Johnny Depp, 59. In June, she lost the case to her ex-husband and was ordered to pay damages of $US$. 8.35 million (about R$ 42.5 million).
Heard announced this Monday (15) that it has hired the law firm Ballard Spahr. Lawyers David L. Axelrod and Jay Ward Brown, who will represent the actress, successfully defended the New York Times against a defamation lawsuit brought by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.
Elaine Bredehoft, who was the lead attorney at the trial, announced her departure from the team but did not explain why. She said it’s the perfect time to “pass the baton” and that she’s done her due diligence to ensure the new team is ready. Attorney Ben Rottenborn was retained as co-adviser in the case.
The new lawyers said they are confident the appeals court will interpret the law in Heard’s favor and clear the actress’ name. “We welcome the opportunity to represent Miss Heard on this appeal as it is an important case for the First Amendment implications for the country,” the new attorneys said.
In May, days before testifying in court in the defamation lawsuit brought by her ex-husband, the actress also changed the public relations team. She wasn’t enjoying it at the time of the coverage she’s been getting in the media about her legal battle with Depp, according to The Post.
