“Political elites not only reflect, but shape public opinion,” he said in the International Datis Conference For the communities of inclusion and for the organization of the program of international social research in Greece.
The conference was held at Center for spreading research results (KEDEA) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
During the first part of the Datis Congress, presentations were held by the scientific manager of the project, Professor of the Department of Political Science Ioannis Andreadis, and by the PhDs and researchers of the project Nicoletta Sivenou, Styliani Tseliou, Eleni-Maria Papachristou, Basil Simpseri and Nikolaos Papachristos.
The first of the studies presented on the form of the family has shown how political ideologies and religiosity influence attitudes towards “non -traditional families”.
In this context, as mentioned, Scandinavian and Western European countries are highly accepted by “family diversity”, as opposed to Eastern European countries, while “Greece has a moderate, conservative image”.
The next study focused on attitudes against immigrants, using ISSP data of 2023. The results have shown that political and religious attitudes are the strongest prognostic indicators. People with increased religiosity and right -wing political orientation have shown to be linked to more skeptical attitudes to the migration. On the contrary, socio-demographic factors, such as age and gender, have not shown that they have a significant influence on the formation of an opinion on immigrants.
In addition, another study presented results on digital transformation and social inequalities. Citizens’ attitudes are mainly shaped by socio-demographic factors and less ideological positions.
Older people believe that “people with a higher education level have the lead” and have better conditions for their social development. Education also differentiates the perceptions, with higher education graduates more strongly recognizing the advantages of their social paths.
At the same time, at the conference the National post -election survey of 2023which was based on an innovative methodological framework, combining online questionnaires and telephone interviews. Its biggest contribution lies in the methodology, promoting more flexible and effective data collection practices for the study of electoral behavior. However, findings and results of data analysis were presented, emphasizing the vote as a result of factors such as financial evaluation, or even the evaluation of the government’s journey by voters.
Finally, research findings on political elites have shown that they do not only reflect, but shape public opinion. Left elites, unlike the right, appear more supportive of social equality issues, especially on immigration and rights issues.
In financial issues, the differences are more complex.
Overall, the conference highlighted the importance of Greece’s participation in the program of international social research (ISSP), both in the development of innovative data collection and processing methods and in the analysis of critical issues related to family, migration, digital transformation and electoral behavior.
At the Data for Inclusive Societies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the close interconnection of the project with the International Social Social Survey Program was highlighted at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Greek participation in ISSP is a foundation for the production of credible social data, which are essential for academic research, policies and understanding critical social issues.
Through ISSP surveys, citizens express their perceptions of national identity, health, family, digital transformation and work.
The participation of the Department of Political Science in the Program upgrades its prestige and international recognition of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
At the same time, the Datis research project implemented in the context of the National Hellenic Union-NEXTGENEUU (implementing body: EL.IDEK) is an innovative methodologically, implementing new data collection practices, such as SMS and SMS. Data quality.
Greece’s contribution to ISSP is decisive, as it systematically implements pilot research, while recognizing the high level of innovative methods developed within Datis has led Greece to the ISP Methodology Committee. The next steps include further comparative international analyzes, the diffusion of results in society and the state, as well as the ensuring stable funding, to continue the production of high quality social data, despite existing obstacles in the Greek research environment.
