She was among the few women in Japan to head an international fashion house
The stylist died a few days ago Hanae Mori, world-renowned member of the haute couture elite. She died on August 11 at her home in Tokyo at the age of 96, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported Thursday.
Hanae Mori, known by her nickname “Madame Butterfly” for the butterfly-inspired designs that became her signature over the decades, she signed luxury creations worn by Nancy Reagan, Grace Kelly, members of the Japanese royal family and the Japanese elite.
She was one of the few women in Japan to head an international fashion house, and in this respect was a pioneer among her compatriots.
Her career took her from Tokyo—where she made her film costume debut—to New York and Paris where, in 1997, she saw the fashion house she headed become the first from Asia to join the haute couture.
Her first collection presented abroad (in New York in 1965) celebrated the meeting of “East” and “West”.
Big names in Japanese fashion, such as Issei Miyaki, who died earlier this month, followed in her footsteps.
Despite the closure of her Paris atelier in 2004 after her last fashion show in the French capital, Hanae Mori boutiques remain open in the Japanese capital. Her perfumes are sold all over the world.
