Collecting from nature materials such as branches, wild grasses and tree bark, Jeanne Simmons crafts “garments” that interweave her body or the bodies of others with the landscape and blur the distinction between them.

“When we spend a long time in a place, and if we give it our attention, a kind of familiarity develops,” says the artist. “We learn about the plants that grow there and the animals that roam there… We can begin to feel that we ourselves have become a part of that place and it is precisely this feeling that keeps me going and inspires me,” he confesses.

In one of her creations, Simmons braided dry vegetation into a model’s blonde hair to create a long braid that appears to have emerged from the ground. “This is how I honor and deepen my connection to the natural world. I guess I’ve discovered the best way for me to become part of the landscape… is to wear it,” she emphasizes. “It is also – in part at least – a lament for the catastrophic loss of this connection which, in real time, we are witnessing.”
