The studies for the extension of the Athens metro to Elliniko and Glyfada have begun, while the next extensions are also being planned.
At the same time, the construction projects of metro line 4 with them two metropolitans to have made significant strides in opening the two tunnels from the Galatsi and the Putty who will meet at his station Evangelism. Faster the opening of the metropontikas tunnel that goes from Goudi to Evangelismos where it is expected to arrive towards the end of 2025 early 2926. The second metropontikas from Galatsi is estimated to reach Evangelismos in late 2026 early 2027.
The CEO of Hellenic Metro Nikos Kouretas stated a few days ago that “now it’s her turn extension of line two from Anthoupoli station in Thivon Street at Dove up to Agios Nikolaos in Ilion with three Palatiani stations, Ilion and Agios Nikolaos. In a future extension, this line is expected to reach Acharnes and be connected to the suburban network. It is an expansion that the residents of Acharno, Kamateros and the wider area are very much in demand of, with the local self-government actors having made it an immediate priority. In parallel with the expansion to Ilion, the modernization of the depot in Eleonas is also progressing.”
According to Mr. Kureta after Ilion or immediate priority is the extension to Glyfada and Ellinikowhere a new city within the city is being created, with studies already underway.
At the same time, its expansion is being studied Line 4 to both directions. One line will start from Puttywill pass through Kifisias Avenue and will arrive at Lykovrysi and Melissiawhile the second will start from Galatsi and will reach almost to Athens – Lamia National Highway.
Studies have also begun for the connection of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center with the metro network.
Regarding the time horizon of all these interventions, Mr. Kouretas emphasized that some will take from five to ten years, some others maybe even more.
“Metro projects are difficult, complex, complex, many stages of studies are required until we get to contract them”, explained the CEO of Hellenic Metro, adding that good studies, good supervision and immediate treatment of the problems that arise are needed.
Both Mr. Kouretas and transportation experts emphasize the need to develop and the means of fixed orbit in the large urban centers, primarily of course in Athens, which faces a serious traffic problem.
