Jonah Hill, 38, wrote an open letter, released by several American media outlets, in which he informs that he will no longer participate in the promotion of his upcoming projects. The actor says he will instead focus on taking care of his mental health.
Known for films like “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013) and “Don’t Look Up” (2021), he said that the idea began to take shape recently, when he directed the documentary “Stutz”. The film deals with his relationship with his therapist.
“The purpose of this film was to bring the therapy and tools I learned in therapy to a wider audience to use privately through an entertainment production,” he wrote. “On this journey of self-discovery, I came to understand that I spent nearly 20 years having anxiety attacks, which were compounded by my presence in the media and at public events.”
He is grateful that the film will debut at festivals soon, but says he won’t be promoting this or any project he’ll be participating in in the future. One of them is the movie “You People”, scheduled to premiere later this year on Netflix, in which he stars with Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny.
The initiative, according to the actor, is “an important step” to protect himself. “I got sicker more from doing these events, I wouldn’t be being honest with myself or the movie,” he said. He even admitted that he is one of the “privileged few” who can take time to take care of his own mental health.
“I’m not going to lose my job while I improve my anxiety,” he celebrated. “With this letter and with ‘Stutz’, I hope to make people feel that it is normal to speak and act about these kinds of things. That way, they can walk towards feeling better and living their lives with a clearer understanding of their issues. .”
The actor also thanked his collaborators and fans for understanding and supporting him at this time.
