Today’s Google Doodle celebrates Azah Aziz’s 94th birthday. She spent her life contributing to the preservation of Malaysian art and tradition. Given her heritage, Aziz was named Tokoh Budayawan Melayu or “Malaysian figure of culture”.

She was born in Singapore in 1928. Her keen interest in language, culture and the arts was fostered by her mother, Azizah, who came from a distinguished family. Aziz inherited an extraordinary collection of early Malaysian textiles and clothing from her mother which fueled her passion for the culture and paved the way for her to become a respected figure in Malaysian culture.

He became secretary to the editor of a newspaper, moving into the field of journalism. She started Akaz, her own publishing company, where she elevated the Malaysian arts and contributed to a number of publications, including Malaysia’s first daily evening tabloid, Harian Metro and the oldest newspaper, the New Straits Times.

She also published books, as well as children’s songs and poems, becoming the first woman in Malaysia to do so. At the end of her 10-year career as a journalist, she founded the Malaysian Association of Women Journalists and became the president of the National Writers’ Association of Malaysia.
