The program, at the Forest Theatre, begins with ‘Spanish Caprice’
With well-known Spanish and gypsy rhythmsin a musical evening under the stars, the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki appears on Saturday, August 27 at the 8th Forest Festival with the concert “Bolero!”, under the direction of the French conductor Philippe Forget and the distinguished Greek mezzo-soprano Marisia Papalexiou.
The programme, at the Forest Theatre, begins with ‘Spanish Capriccio’ which Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov wrote fascinated by the melodic brilliance and rhythmic richness of traditional Spanish music, which he got to know through his travels as a Naval officer.
The opera ‘Carmen’ is his magnum opus Georges Bizet and certainly one of the most popular works of the lyric repertoire. The composer masterfully dresses the tragic story of the fiery gypsy with his music and “passes her into eternity”, according to the saying of Hugh MacDonald.
Manuel de Falla has been described by experts as the greatest Spanish composer, with his works cutting deep into the heart of his homeland’s music and highlighting it like never before. “Trikoho Capelo” is his best-known ballet, with its music conveying the joy of life and Andalusian passion. The deeply emotional “Seven Spanish Songs” are inspired by traditional Spanish melodies and dances.
The famous “Bolero” is Maurice Ravel’s most popular composition and is a unique musical achievement, since the genius composer manages to create something so impressive based on a simple crescendo.
