The palace of the Monegasques opened its gates and welcomes the public again after the completion of its restoration work, which brought to light hidden frescoes from the Italian Renaissance.

Visitors can take a guided tour of the historic rooms, admire the stunning frescoes as well as other works of art that are on display for the first time.

It was built in 1191 as a Genoese fortress on a rock more than 60 meters high in the center of the city and has suffered in its long history bombardments and sieges by various foreign powers.

Since the late 1200s, it has been the residence of the powerful Grimaldi family, who first occupied it in 1297. On the evening of January 8, Francois Grimaldi sought asylum as a Franciscan monk. An unsuspecting guard gave him safe passage and together with his men, they captured it. Since then, it has been the seat of the Grimaldi family with the characteristic coat of arms representing two monks holding a sword together with the coat of arms of Monaco.

According to ‘Hello Monaco’, the recent renovations have brought to light previously unseen works of art, sculptures and frescoes of “extraordinary heritage”. As “Royal Central” reports, the 600 square meter murals were reportedly uncovered thanks to conservators who scraped the ceiling of the Hercules Gallery with a scalpel “revealing bold and brightly colored masterpieces likely from the Italian Renaissance”.

The historic palace also has a zoo founded by the late Prince Rainier III in 1954 with 300 animals from at least 60 different species, according to Tatler.

It will remain open to visitors until October. It is worth noting that when the prince’s flag is raised again on the main tower it means that the prince has returned.
