The findings that the archaeological dig has brought to light in recent years at the site of “Gourimadi” on the outskirts of Karistos are awe-inspiring.
The important prehistoric settlement uncovered after a two-year excavation in Evia dates back to the Late Neolithic period.
As stated in an announcement by the Ministry of Culture, the settlement is a facility that was founded in a naturally fortified position, occupying part of the rocky hill of the same name located on the borders of the plain of Katsaroni.
Based on the excavated evidence so far and their preliminary study, it dates mainly to the Late Neolithic era, while it shows fragmentary evidence of habitation and use both during the Late Neolithic and during the early phases of the Early Bronze Age.
The settlement offers valuable new data for the above periods both for the area of Karystia and for the wider Aegean area. It is estimated that the continuation of the excavation will contribute to clarifying the hitherto problematic transition from the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age.
The work, which has so far been concentrated on the plateau of the top of the hill and its southern part, has yielded interesting architectural and other immovable remains, as well as a number of movable finds.
