Municipality of Athens: The Colon Festival is back – See the program

The Colon Festival of the Municipality of Athensthe festival of culture and entertainment that the Athenian public has made an institution of, returns powerfully in September, in the historic neighborhood of the city, on the green hill of Hippo Colonus.

From September 8 to 26 in the theater of Kolonou, favorite artists share with the residents and visitors of the city, special and selected theatrical performances and concerts, with a rich program of events curated by the Organization for Culture, Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA).

After the success of the summer program “All of Athens is a stage” of the Municipality of Athens, which OPANDA implemented by supporting artists and cultural workers in practice, in the context of Culture is Athens-Culture is Athens, OPANDA gives an appointment in the autumn with the public and artists at the theater of Kolonou, continuing to offer culture, entertainment and quality of life in city neighborhoods.

“With consistency, design and imagination, we highlight Athens as a capital of culture, creation and cooperation! We offer entertainment and fun for young and old in the city’s neighborhoods, while at the same time supporting the artistic world to continue creating and sharing with its audience. We need both very much!” said the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis.

For her part, the President of the Organization, Niki Arabatzi, he characteristically said: “The Kolonou Festival returns strongly, with a multitude of performances and concerts, in a special neighborhood of Athens and a wonderful theater, which is loved by the residents and citizens, but also by everyone who lives in Attica. And this September the beloved festival marks our return to the city and farewell to summer with a grand celebration of culture. We are waiting for you to welcome autumn together with 19 days full of art, light, music and smiles”.

The curtain of the Festival opens on Thursday, September 8 with the modern Greek fantasy novel “O Pithekos Xouth” by Iakovos Pitsipios, which is staged for the first time in the theater under the direction of Roubinis Moschohoritis, while the public will have the opportunity to enjoy theatrical productions of the summer, which have received excellent reviews and have stood out. The stage of the theater will welcome “Thesmophoriazusas” with Yannis Bezos, Vladimiros Kyriakides and Fotini Baxevanis, as well as “Imaginary Patient” directed by Costas Gakis with Thanasis Tsaltabassi in the lead role together with Nicoleta Vlavianou and Nikos Orphan. One of the most important representatives of the younger generation of actresses, Maria Petevi as Iphigenia, together with Lazaros Georgakopoulos, Ioanna Pappas, Akis Sakellariou and Giorgos Chrysostomou keep the main roles in “Iphigenia en Avlidis” by Euripides directed by Themis Moumoulidis, while it will also be presented Aeschylus’ “Prometheus Bound” directed by Ari Biniaris in an excellent cast formed by, among others, Yiannis Stankoglou, Alekos Syssovitis and Ioannis Papazisis.

The Cologne Festival

The theater of Colonos is, again in the autumn, a meeting point for favorite artists of the Greek music scene and the Athenian public, who will say goodbye to each other in the summer at the concerts of the Colonos Festival. Penny Baltatzi with the Athens Big Band, Christos Nikolopoulos with Pizza Papadopoulou and Stelios Dionysiou, Dimitris Bassis, Christos Papadopoulos with Lambros Karelas, Giorgos Sarris, Thodoris Papadopoulos and Vassilis Kordatos, as well as the Symphony and Choir of the Municipality of Athens, weave the musical fabric of the festival, which will turn our autumn evenings into atmospheric, unique, enjoyable, musical experiences.

The Colon Festival celebrates the anniversary of the completion 100 years since the Asia Minor Disaster with special theatrical and musical performances.

“The Refugee” directed by Emilias Ypsilantis, “Miss of… nobody” directed by Nicoleta Vlavianou, “Angela Papazoglou” directed by Lambros Liavas and Anna Vagenas, “The chronicle of ten days – Aivali 1922” directed by Mania Papadimitriou and the musical performance “Smyrneiko Minore” with Grigoris Valtinos in the narration, memories will come alive, talking to us about the unforgettable homelands. Finally, the tribute to Smyrna and the refugee is completed by the concerts “Ah! Anatoli” with Petros Gaitanos and Nadia Karagiannis and “With the sunny neighbor and our woes armathia” with Manolis Mitsias, Myrto Vassiliou, Thanos Matzilis and Eleanna Varela.
