Only 8 intrepid visitors are these days at the Olympus Refuge, among them a German musician, Christian, who takes his flute and climbs every day to a different peak for inspiration and plays music.

At the Christos Kakalos Refuge, at an altitude of 2,650 meters on the Muses plateau, the fog, the strong wind, the intense rainfall and the very low temperature, compose a wild scene.

Only 8 daring visitors are these days at the Refuge among them a German musician, Christian, who takes his flute and climbs every day to a different peak for inspiration and plays music. In fact, the German musician and mountain and mountaineering fanatic plays the shakuhachi, a bamboo flute, a traditional Japanese instrument.

At noon on Thursday, Christian was on one of the twin peaks of Kalaya, at 2,640 meters, which for the Twelvers have a special energy. The name Kalaya probably comes from the Turkish word kalay which means tin, as the stone slabs of the two peaks take on the blue-green color of tin when the sunlight falls on them.

“The last two days have been strange here on the mountain, although we are used to hard times. The thermometer has only dropped to 2 º C and the wood stove burns continuously. We have several cancellations, we are 8 people and some campers who spend the night around the tents”, Alexandros Styllas, administrator of the Christos Kakalos Refuge, told Voria.
