It was a Saturday night, and the actor Diogo Brito, known as Guito, wore a usual peon hat, riding boots and carried a guitar in his arms. But this time he wasn’t in a viola circle in the soap opera “Pantanal”, he was in the arena of the Festa de Peão de Barretos in front of a crowd.
The actor, who plays Tibério in Globo’s 9 pm plot, made his debut as a singer in the main arena of the event that takes place in the interior of São Paulo. He sang “Ave Maria”, playing viola and harmonica, after the final of the National Rodeo League (LNR), which took place on Saturday night (27).
Born in the city of Lavras, in Minas, Guito claims to be “very Tibério”. “The pawn represents the maximum idolatry of those who are from the countryside, of those who have some ties to the rural sector. So for me it’s an accomplishment, even more to play in the middle of the arena, for the pawns. It was exciting.”
Currently, Guito lives a pawn in the soap opera “Pantanal”, where he makes his debut as an actor. Giving life to the same character that Sérgio Reis represented in the first version of the plot, the artist lets out his voice and plays the guitar, showing the viewer his main passion: music.
With a degree in agronomy, he says that he started singing due to the influence of the environment in which he lived, but also of the soap operas “Pantanal” and “A História de Ana Raia e Zé Trovão”, which aired in the 1990s on the extinct TV Manchete. “A lot of who I am today is what I watched when I was six,” he says.
“My grandfather was very much the figure of the Old Man of Rio, so we would gather there in the countryside to watch [à novela]. The Velho do Rio always passed, and my father and uncles were moved, maybe that’s why I created this bond. Then came Almir [Sater] with his violin in ‘Ana Raia e Zé Trovão’, then that’s it: I was going to play the guitar.”
Despite never having dreamed of an acting career, Guito says that his presence in “Pantanal” is unusual and that he did not expect that he would play an “almost protagonist” in his first work. “Tiberius is not the protagonist, but he is a very important character in the plot,” he says. Thus, he even considers embarking on his career.
“Wow, the gang is the boss, but it looks like they’re enjoying it, right?! [Fazer novela] It’s a beautiful way to tell a story, and I only knew one way to tell about my life, and that was through music. But now I’m enjoying it, thinking it’s good, since everyone’s applauding.”
Despite this, Guito, who is married and the father of two children, says he never wanted fame, what he always wanted was to make a living from music and travel the country singing and playing. Now that success has arrived, however, he has enjoyed public recognition, despite having changed little from his routine.
“It is very gratifying to be able to receive the affection of people on the street, to see the passion in their eyes, to make those I represent proud, who are rural people, the country man, the rustic culture, the countryside crowd. making them proud is the most rewarding. Anyone who doesn’t dream about it is crazy.”
