With highly symbolic works by Greek and foreign composers, on Wednesday September 7, 2022 at 9 p.m., the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, gives an open concert in Aristotelous Square, honoring the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

The K.O.Th. it is conducted by its artistic director Zoe Tsokanou and the flute soloist is Stathis Karapanos, who excels abroad and was recently awarded the so-called ‘Bernstein Prize’.

The program begins with the ‘Dodecanese Suite no. 1’ by Yiannis Konstantinidis, a composition that gave new life to traditional songs of the Dodecanese, by a composer originally from Smyrna. This is followed by Fauré’s melancholic ‘Pavana’ and the dramatic introduction from the opera ‘The Force of Destiny’ by Verdi with the characteristic motif of Fate.

K.O.Th. will present the first world performance of the Greek composer and pianist Achilleas Vastor’s work ‘Time Lapse’ and then Glazunov’s ‘Introduction no. 1 on Three Greek Themes’ will be heard. The program concludes with the emblematic ‘Zorba’ by Mikis Theodorakis, in a transcription of the ballet suite for flute and orchestra, in the first pan-Hellenic performance.
