Thousands of people from all corners of the world gathered in Spain to “fight” with tomatoes! This is the famous festival “La Tomatina”, which returned after two years due to the coronavirus and is held in the city of Buñol, near Valencia, Spain.

Trucks loaded with overripe tomatoes drove through Buñol’s narrow streets as local residents hurled them into the crowd, leaving the area drenched in red pulp.

This is one of the most famous customs of Spain. Within a day, thousands of tourists gather in the Spanish city, who, together with the residents, engage in a merciless tomato war until the end.

Characteristically, some participants wore goggles to protect their eyes while their clothes were drenched in juice and red slime. Others simply bathed in the pulp.

The festival – traditionally held on the last Wednesday in August – was inspired by a food race instigated by local children in 1945, according to organizers. It has inspired similar celebrations around the world, including in cities in Colorado and Nevada.

It is characteristic that from 1945 to 2012 participation was free. But since 2013 the mayor of the city has established a ticket of around 12 euros, to cover the costs of the tomato and policing, but also to keep the crowds in reasonable numbers.
