One day before the opening of schools, the Municipality of Athens invites young and old to spend creative time in the museums and cultural spaces of the municipality through recreational and educational activities with free participation. The beloved “Sundays in Athens” returns on Sunday, September 11 with the theme “Above all the book!” commemorating the World Day for the Eradication of Illiteracy which is celebrated on September 8.
The first activity of the fall season invites participants to discover the magical world of the book through fun and original creative learning activities. Our little friends will dive into the exciting universe of books, travel the whole world through its pages, rummage through secret archives and create their own heroes and their own unique stories!
In the action on Sunday, September 11, the following venues are participating: Fotaeri Industrial Museum, “Angeliki Hatzimichalis” Museum of Folk Art and Tradition, Plato’s Academy Digital Museum, Central Library, Children’s Library, “Eleftherios Venizelos” Museum. Participation in the activities is free, with a reservation required for each area of ​​interest.

Caution! Someone tried to steal secret documents of the old gas plant, the first energy plant in all of Greece! But the guard stopped him but, in his attempt to escape, the thief scattered the secret documents throughout the factory… Will you manage to find them and put them back in their place? Guided by a map and other exploration tools, become a detective and get ready to discover the rarest documents of the old factory!

What were textbooks like in 1917 or 1928? What were high school students taught in Greek history class in 1917? What were they learning in Cosmography class in 1923? We expect children and parents to see old school books up close and to take a journey through education from the time of Eleftherios Venizelos to today.
