by

The exhibition is “a preview of a retrospective, our own collection of 13,000 photographic objects from the Boisson archive”.

The Franco-Swiss photographer Fred Boissonon a Greek mission with his compatriot, art historian Daniel Bond Bowie, made the first recorded ascent of Mount Olympus on August 2, 1913.

He helped them then, the experienced Christos Kakkalos from Litochoro, who from a very young age was involved with the mountain and in his honor the refuge of the same name, at the eastern end of the Plateau of the Muses, at a height of 2650 meters, was “christened”.

This mission was part of one of the many trips made by Boisson in Greece from 1903 to 1933, images from which are included in the exhibition entitled “Fred Boisson and the Mediterranean. A photographic Odyssey”, which is inaugurated today, Thursday, at the MOMus-Museum of Photography of Thessaloniki, by the Deputy Minister of Culture, in charge of Contemporary Culture, Nikolas Giatromanolakis.

Olympus, Mount Athos, Epirus Fairytale, Parna

These are just some of the images, 110 in total, through which the visitor traces the formation of Fred Boisson’s photographic vision, the sources of his inspiration and his long-term effort to reduce photography to the realm of fine art.

As stated in today’s press conference, Estelle Sohierassociate professor at the Department of Geography and Environment at the University of Geneva, who is the general curator, the exhibition, in addition to the different dimensions of Boisson’s photographic work, “also highlights what Greece offered to his career”.

The press conference was also attended by Boisson’s great-granddaughter, Cleo Bochel, who also loves Greece and visits it often. As she told APE-MBE, she was particularly moved when she found herself in Ouranoupoli, looking across at Mount Olympus, in the same position where her great-grandfather had been at the beginning of the last century.

Visitors to the exhibition at the Museum of Photography are greeted by Fred Boisson’s photographic self-portrait from 1900 and follow his journeys through the world, from the Alps to the Sinai desert, which pass and cross the Mediterranean.

This report is, as pointed out by Iro Katsaridouits director MOMus-Museum of Photography of Thessaloniki, “a preview of a retrospective, our own collection of 13,000 photographic objects of the Boisson archive”.

The exhibition is co-curated by the art historian Aretis Leopoulos and the exhibition is a production of MOMus – Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, with the collaboration of the Department of Geography and Environment of the University of Geneva, the Library of Geneva and the Museum of Art and History of the City of Geneva Musée d’art et d’histoire de Genève and with the assistance of the Central Library of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

“Expressions of weaving through works of the MOMus collections”

This afternoon, it is also inaugurated by Mr. Giatromanolaki at the Port, the exhibition “Expressions of weaving through works of the MOMus collections”, in the area of the Experimental Arts Center.

For the first time in the history of MOMus, works from all three MOMus Museums (Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Contemporary Art and Museum of Photography) compose a new original production, which attempts to redefine part of the collections, but also of the history of art and to highlight multiple aspects of artistic creation with reference to thread, fabric and weaving processes.

The report, edited by the Thuli Misirloglou – if. director of MOMus-PKT and Domna Gounari – MOMus-PKT curator, starts from the period of modernism through works of the Russian avant-garde and runs through contemporary artistic production from 1960 to the present day.

As Ms. Mysirloglou mentioned, it includes works by diverse artists, who follow tradition, more like a memory with new data.

MOMus museums will be open during TIF and the ticket for visitors will be reduced by 50%.

Need for about 70 additional staff and building upgrade

The delay in the installation of the new MOMus board of directors, appointed in July, resulted in the delay of the tender procedures for the three heads of the MOMus museums – Museum of Modern Art – Kostaki Collection, MOMus – Museum of Contemporary Art and MOMus – Center for Experimental Arts, but also for the new general manager.

These outstanding issues, as well as the need for additional staff, were mentioned by the new chairman of the MOMus Board of Directors, Epaminondas Christofilopoulosnoting that currently 35 people work for the Organization, while 104 are needed.

Mr. Christofilopoulos also referred to the Organization’s building problems, noting that although the Museums are housed in beautiful buildings, they have great infrastructure needs, as was seen last Sunday, with the heavy rain causing problems, without being recorded disasters in works – at MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art inside TIF.

Also, one of the goals of the new MOMus Board of Directors is to put museums “on the agenda of people involved in tourism”, as the president of MOMus said, while emphasis will also be placed on the development of sales, through which apart from income to the Museums, Greek creators are also given a foothold, but also in cooperation with research bodies.
